Brussels struggles with its Poland problem

The European Commission is trying to dial down tensions with Warsaw over whether Poland shares the EU’s democratic principles, but there is growing doubt in Brussels that a way out of the stalemate can be found. Few believe the Commission’s current rule-of-law probe will ever result in official sanctions against Poland — even if it progresses past several proceduralobstacles designed to prevent that outcome.
