The European Commission is trying to dial down tensions with Warsaw over whether Poland shares the EU’s democratic principles, but there is growing doubt in Brussels that a way out of the stalemate can be found.
Few believe the Commission’s current rule-of-law probe
will ever result in official sanctions against Poland — even if it progresses past several proceduralobstacles designed to prevent that outcome
. Diplomats and politicians said any punishment for Warsaw’s outspoken intransigence on its actions may have to come in less tangible ways — if it comes at all.
